Breast Reduction Surgery

The breast is one of the most important sexual objects in women, and therefore breast aesthetic surgeries are one of the most frequently performed aesthetic surgeries among women. It is one of the surgeries that make women the most happy. Excessive weight loss, passive life, loss of elasticity in the skin, pregnancies and long-term breastfeeding will cause deformations in the breasts and sagging will occur over time. As large breasts pose an aesthetic problem, the reason for surgery in most of the patients is the patient's back, shoulder and neck pain. Grooves may form on the shoulders attached to the bras. Try walking around for just a few hours with a heavy weight hanging around your neck.

Even in this short time, this excess weight will overwhelm you. At the same time, large and drooping breasts create hygiene problems, especially in very hot weather, and cause skin problems under the breasts due to irritation due to friction and excessive sweating. Very large breasts in young girls also cause some psychosocial problems, which are often a reason for embarrassment. Due to this embarrassment, leaning forward causes a hump on the back over time. In some cases, the size is one-sided and can further increase the feeling of embarrassment. Patients look for ways to camouflage this asymmetry. Before the operation, the patient is carefully examined. Existing diseases, hormonal disorders, breast diseases, past infections, previous surgeries and family history are investigated. USG and mammography examinations are requested. In case of doubt, General Surgery consultation is requested. Breast reduction surgeries are performed after breast development is completed. However, there are some exceptions to this. Young girls with virginal breast hypertrophy may require surgery before development is complete so that normal psychosocial development is not affected. Breast reduction surgeries are among the surgeries that require more experience than breast augmentation surgeries. Great care should be taken to preserve the milk ducts and nipple sensation as much as possible, especially in young individuals. Stimulation of the nipple by the baby causes contraction of the mammary glands and secretion of milk with a neural and hormonal cycle in which prolactin and oxytocin hormones also play a role. In order for this sucking reflex to work, it is essential that the nipple be sensitive. Decreased nipple sensitivity can disrupt this cycle and negatively affect milk secretion.

If the nipple is separated from the breast tissue underneath and applied as a free patch, it is not possible to breastfeed. Since the nipple is somewhat displaced depending on the breast tissue in almost all of the breast reduction methods applied today, breastfeeding is possible because the ducts and the breast tissue that secretes milk are preserved, but the amount may decrease due to the reduction of the breast tissue volume. It can be said that breast reduction surgery does not increase the risk of breast cancer, and even reduces the probability of developing breast cancer by reducing the breast tissue and histopathological examination of the removed breast tissue. The duration of the operation varies between 2-4 hours, depending on the technique to be used. Breast reduction surgeries are among the surgeries that have scars.

The patient should understand this point well. These surgeries result in scars with different locations depending on the method. The scars should generally remain in the bra and bikini and should not protrude as much as possible. When the patient wears low-cut clothes, it should not disturb the patient. In general, a vertical scar is formed around the nipple in the form of an inverted-T that descends vertically from the areola and fits into the breast groove, or in the form of a racket extending from the nipple to the inframammary fold line. Although this scar is initially uncomfortable in appearance, it gives good results over time. These scars are initially pink-red in color; If there is no pathological wound healing in the patient, it gradually fades and turns white within months.
